Amid a growing concern for children safety, in
which they are sometimes subjected to physical
and sexual violence, in and out of the classroom,
practical tips have been given out to children, on
how they can speak out, assert themselves, and
stop their abusers.
The tips were given at a recent lecture delivered by
the president of Trinity Writers and Publishers
Association (formerly known as “CWAN”), Pastor
Peter Morakinyo represented by Pastor John Otun.
The venue was the maiden edition of Trinity
Spelling Bee Competition for primary schools in
Lagos State, 2024, held in conjunction with Lagos
State Government. It took place at Bright Sun
College, Agidingbi.
Pastor Morakinyo defined sexual harassment as
“any unwanted sexual behavior that makes
someone upset, scared, offended or humiliated”.
He offered the following practical ways children can
say ‘No’ and stop their abusers:
* Make the harasser to understand, either verbally,
in writing, or by your physical action, that their
actions are causing you to be uncomfortable and
they must stop.
* Get the support of others. You may not be able
to handle the matter alone.
* Ask the school for help.
* Make an official internal complaint.
* Tell your parents.
* Find out whether a government body or an
NGO can help.
* Seek support for your health and well being.
* Collect evidence.
* Call the police.
Queen Bee of Spelling: Blessing Ibor Takes the Crown
It was a keenly contested
competition of who could spell
best, among Primary School
pupils in Lagos State, when
Blessing Ibor, of Vicmob
Private School, showed that
when it comes to words and
spellings, she clearly knows
her A,B,C. Emerging as the
last pupil standing, the feat of
becoming the best speller was
not an easy one, as she had to
contend with two other
formidable and determined
spellers, Chiamaka Erue, of
Dansol Nursery and Primary
School, and Elizabeth Agboola
of Felicia Adebola Memorial
School.
The trio, went through rounds
and rounds of spellings with no
one missing a word and when
the heat became too much,
they were given a few
moments of respite to cool off.
Many of the guests agreed that
the children were really good
spellers. Eventually, Blessing
Ibor emerged the winner.
Problematic words some of
the spellers struggled with
i n c l u d e d ‘ S e p a r a t e ‘ ,
‘entrepreneur’; ‘abattoir’,
‘queue’, ‘Mediterranean’ and
‘etiquette’. Schools that took
part in the competition were,
Vicmob Private School,
Pinkfield Academy, Solid
Anchorage, Lead Path Nursery
& Primary School, Felicia
Adebola Memorial
School, Honesty International,
Godswill School, Adebola
Creatives Academy, Dansol
International , Okays
Foundation, Tobol Hill and
Great Orchardland School,
Bright Sound College.
Awards were also given out to
some deserving individuals
for their contributions to
education in Lagos State.
