At the SAIPEC 2025 held at Eko Convention Centre Lagos, Crude Reports Magazine visited the stand of Women in Energy Oil and Gas (WEOG) and chatted with the chairperson, Lagos Chapter, Dr. Lucy Okeke. She spoke on the challenges and opportunities for women in the industry.
Various opportunities exist for women in the energy, oil and gas space in Nigeria. However, we are faced with a lot of challenges and barriers to full participation for women and their opportunities in career growth. But to get these opportunities, women have to be visible. So the opportunities in STEM on in energy, oil and gas, we have participation for girls in STEM, where we give them scholarships. We make sure that they get the capacity building that is requisite for girls in STEM, which will enable them get into careers in the energy, oil and gas industry. There are also opportunities for mentorship and role model because we have a formal role model structure for girls in Stem so they can get into the oil and gas industry and participate fully. Also, we ensure that it gets visibility for the women who have already built their careers in the oil and gas industry. We give them opportunities in speakership positions or speakership opportunities in conferences like this.
We have the unconscious bias. We know that it’s a male dominated sector, and so getting women into leadership positions and decision making positions still remains a critical issue. And so we need policies from the government, from the private sector that will allow this challenge to be overcome. We need policies, flexible work policies. We also need the government to come up with policies like equal pay for equal work, to encourage our women in the industry. So these are just a few of the challenges and that’s why we’re here today. Women in energy, oil and gas, to create awareness, to give that visibility, to encourage women and to let them know we’re here to mentor them, to offer that role model for them so that they can be encouraged to come into the oil and gas sector and fully participate.
