Nigeria’s image as a big player in the African oil industry received a boost with the appointment of Mr Ademola Adeyemi Bero as the Chairman, Board of Governors for Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), for 2025.
In a statement posted on its website, OPEC noted that the appointment was confirmed at the 189th meeting of the OPEC Conference. It reads further, “The Conference appointedMr. Ademola Adeyemi Bero, Governor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for OPEC, as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the year 2025 and Engineer Adeeb Al Arma, Governor of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for OPEC, as alternate Chairman for the same period.
Before his appointment, Adeyemi Bero was confirmed as Nigeria’s OPEC Governor for the year 2025.
In a congratulatory message, the Minister of State for Petroleum, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, said the appointment is a testament to Nigeria’s active contributions to the global oil industry. A statement released by the Special Assistant on Media and Communication to the Minister, Nneamaka Okafor, Senator Lokpobiri said the appointment is a positive sign of good things to come for Nigeria. In his words, “The appointment provides Nigeria with a vital platform to advocate for balanced energy policies that benefit oil producers, consumers and the global economy.”
The Minister expressed gratitude to the outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, Ambassador Gabriel Aduda for his exemplary service and instrumental role in advancing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and ensuring the country’s influential presence in global energy discussions.
Before now, Nigerians had been appointed as Secretary General of OPEC on four occasions:
Chief M. O. Feyide: Secretary General, OPEC 1975–19766).
Dr. Rilwan Lukman: Secretary General, OPEC (1986–1988; 1995–2000).
Dr. Edmund Dakouru: Secretary General, OPEC (2006–2007);
Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo: Secretary General, OPEC (2016 until his death in 2022).
